To our knowledge, there isn’t a poll that indicates just how silly the USA Today/Gallup poll for “Most Admired Person” appears to be, so we’re creating one. As The Associated Press reports on the silly poll in question:
President-elect Barack Obama is the man Americans say they admire most in the world, according to a USA Today/Gallup poll published Friday.
Thirty two percent of those questioned said Obama was the man they most admired compared with 5 percent for President George W. Bush who came in second. Defeated Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain came in third with 3 percent.
Hillary Rodham Clinton leads the list of most admired women with 20 percent, according to the poll. She has held this spot for 13 of the past 16 years, as first lady, then New York senator and now Obama’ choice to be secretary of state.
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, unknown in much of the U.S. until she became the Republican party’s vice presidential candidate in the November elections, was the second most admired woman with 11 percent. Television talk show host Oprah Winfrey is third with 8 percent.
This isn’t a poll about who you most admire – it’s a poll where pollsters call people on the phone and put them on the spot to name a person that they might admire. The people on the phone, feeling pressured to name somebody, name up with the first person that comes to mind.
How else could George W. Bush be the second-most admired person even though his approval ratings are consistently in the high teens to low 20s? I think Bush is a complete buffoon, but I sure do admire him for that!
Poll follows.

George W. Bush for his consistency. Gotta give ‘im that.
in the quality of your foreign policy decisions, environmental policy initiatives, constitutional behaviors, and ruling “by for and of the people”….that would be for ALL the people…is something to be admired?
My children, God Bless them, consistently shit their pants until they were trained otherwise…..nothing to admire, HOWEVER…they WERE trainable. Can’t say the same for GW.
…being wrong more often than a stopped clock.
I figured by now Zombie Reagan would be more admired than Bush.
In fact, THE poll option: Too Silly.
“On second thought, let’s not go to Camelot. It is a silly place!”
So GWB scores in the low 20s for his approval rating – find me somebody else (besides Obama) that 20% of the population approves of. Makes sense that he would still be a majority option, especially at 5%.
It’s still a silly poll because it’s just a measurement of who the biggest celebrity is.
I guarantee you John McCain’s approval numbers (not necessarily most-admired) are above Bush’s.
20% is horrendous. Don’t try to pin it on celebrity. People are a lot smarter than that.
If 20% of respondents is second-place, and it’s Dubya we’re talking about, I’m not sure you can say that 20% of the people really are smarter than that… Just sayin’.
